Local system - Plane definitions

Vertical Plane

A vertical plane is defined by 2
points.

The X-axis of the plane starts in the
first measured point and points to the
right (seen from the instrument
station). It is horizontal.

The Z-axis is parallel to the
instrument zenith.

The Y-axis is perpendicular to the
plane. Offsets are applied in the
direction of the Y-axis.

For horizontal planes the
positive Z-axis points in the

direction of the instrument’s zenith.
X- and Y-axes are horizontal.

Tilted Plane

For "local" planes defined by 3 or
more points the Z-axis is defined by
the steepest grade of the plane.

The Y-axis is the normal vector of the
plane (+Y is away from the
instrument) and the X-axis is
perpendicular to Z and Y and
consequently horizontal. Offsets are
applied in the direction of the Y-axis.
