Check Lid Seals

Inspect the retort and wax bath lid seals every 60–90 days. Replace if worn or damaged.

1. Pull the old seals out of the grooves.
2. Clean the grooves if necessary with the wax scraper and 70% alcohol.
3. Push the new seals into the grooves. Ensure they are fully seated.

Figure 70 and Figure 71 show how seals fit into the grooves.

4. Equalize the tension in each seal by running your finger around the seal to remove any tight or

loose sections.

Retort Acid Clean

Common fixative reagents (for example formalin) may cause a build-up of precipitate (salt crystals)

on the retort walls. If these cannot be removed by wiping with 70% alcohol follow the procedure

below.

1. If the salt build-up is light, wipe the retort walls with a lint-free cloth dampened with 6% acetic

acid.

2. If the build-up is heavy or is not easily removed, fill a reagent bottle with 6% acetic acid

solution then fill the retort with the solution using the instrument’s remote fill and drain

functions.

3. Leave the acetic acid solution in the retort for one hour at ambient temperature then drain the

acid back to the bottle.

4. Remove the acetic acid solution from the instrument and clean the bottle thoroughly before

using it for any other reagent.

5. Use a clean wax scraper or a lint-free cloth dampened with the acetic acid solution to remove

any remaining salt build-up.

6. Run a cleaning protocol in the retort and select a cleaning alcohol as the initial step.
