Extraction

Introduction

One of the main purposes of Ascent Xtrata Pro is to extract data from documents.
The extracted data is stored in fields. The fields and the extraction definitions are set
up in Project Builder and synchronized with Ascent Capture index fields. For
detailed information about the Synchronization tool, see Setup a Batch Class in Ascent
Capture
.

This chapter describes how to create and edit fields and how to define extraction
methods.

Locators and Fields

Extraction in Ascent Xtrata Pro is performed in two distinct steps: First, the item is
located and then the results of the location algorithm are assigned to one or more
fields. The methods for locating items on the documents are implemented in
standardized engines called locators.

The reason for breaking up the extraction process into two steps lies in the reusability
of locator components and the clarity of design of an extraction strategy. Several
locators can be used to find one field item, but also several fields can be filled from
one locator. Ascent Xtrata Pro comes with a set of predefined locators. It also lets you
add your own locators by providing a script plug-in.

Some locators available for Ascent Xtrata Pro must be licensed separately. The
locators covered in this chapter are part of the standard Ascent Xtrata Pro
installation. It is possible to set up all the locators within the Ascent Xtrata Pro Project
Builder, but Ascent Xtrata Pro Server will not start if a locator is defined in a project
that is not allowed by its license.
