8.8 Configuring frame relay over an IP network

8.8.1 Establishing the configuration task

Applicable environment

With the increasing wide application of IP networks, you need to implement the FR network

based on FR over IP (FRoIP). FRoIP creates GRE tunnel between FR networks at two ends

and transmits FR packets through the GRE tunnel. After setting the GRE tunnel interface, the
FR switching can use it to complete FRoIP. For detailed information, see Figure 8-4.

Figure 8-4

Typical application diagram of FR over IP

You can divide FR packets transmitted on the GRE tunnel into three groups:

FR datagram that has encapsulated with IP header

Inverse ARP packet

LMI packet used to negotiate PVC status on GRE tunnel

You can implement this function using FR switching route and FR switching PVC.

Preconfiguration tasks

Before configuring FR over an IP network and IP header compression, you need to complete

the following tasks:

Configuring physical parameters for FR interfaces

Configuring basic frame relay DTE capability or Configuring basic frame relay DCE

capability

Creating and configuring the source address and destination address of the tunnel
interface
