You can begin adding notes and rests right away to a new or existing score . You can enter standard musical notation or

fretted instrument tablature . There are various ways you can enter information into the score area:

With the mouse, selected rhythmic durations from the palette

With the mouse and using keyboard shortcuts for rhythmic durations

Using on-screen instruments (fretboard, piano keyboard, drumpad) in Step Time

Using QWERTY keys to enter pitch in Step Time (using the letter keys A,B,C,D,E,F,G to enter pitch)

With a MIDI device . You can Enter notes and rests using a MIDI keyboard or MIDI guitar in Step Time or Real Time

record to a metronome

Draw in with Notion’s handwriting recognition .

Import the contents of a MIDI or MusicXML file created in a different music program .

Before You Begin

If you are creating a new score, you generally save time in the long run if you first specify an initial time signature and key

signature (and clef, if needed) before you begin placing notes and rests on a staff . Of course, you can always transpose

later on . Customizing a new score in these ways is the topic of

Chapter 7: Create a New Score

This chapter focuses on how to Enter essential notation into an existing staff . Details on how to add additional staves

Disable/Enable Note Audition

By default, you can hear a staff’s instrument play a note as you Enter it, select it, or move it . Many users find this feedback

helpful; others, such as those with perfect pitch, might find this distracting . If you want, you can disable this audio aid .

1 . Go to the Menu bar and select:

File > Preferences

Mac:

Notion > Preferences

2 . In the General Tab:

-Clear the Echo note input checkbox to silence the sounds during note entry .

-Clear the Echo selection checkbox to silence sounds during note selection, highlighting or moving .

-Clear the Echo MIDI Input checkbox to silence sounds during MIDI note input

3 . Click OK .

If you have unchecked the boxes, you can still audition notes you have selected, by pressing the A key
