CDM-625A Advanced Satellite Modem

MN-CDM625A

Introduction

Revision 3

1–2

• It offers variable data rates, from 18 kbps to 25 Mbps, in BPSK, QPSK, Offset QPSK (OQPSK),

8PSK, 8-QAM, 16-QAM, 8-ARY (VFEC-2), 16-ARY (VFEC-2), and 32-ARY (VFEC-2) modes.

• It supports a complete range of transmit filter options (spectrum shaping). Transmit alphas

of 0.05, 0.10, 0.15 0.20, 0.25 and 0.35 are included, which in turn permits you to reduce

channel spacing as transmit alpha (and hence occupied bandwidth) reduces, providing

potentially significant gains in transponder bandwidth efficiency.

See Appendix S. TRANSMIT SPECTRUM FILTERING OPTIONS for important

information about these new options.

• Its demod design incorporates fast acquisition, optimal composite power handling, and an

integrated adaptive equalizer.

• It includes VersaFEC and VersaFEC-2 Adaptive Coding and Modulation in the base hardware to

increase capacity on IP links.

• It includes DoubleTalk

®

Carrier-in-Carrier

®

in the base hardware, and no longer requires a

separate plug-in card. (However, FAST codes are still required to activate this option.)

• It can be equipped with an optional

IP Packet Processor

card that, in addition to providing

Layer 3 functionality, incorporates a number of key features for Wide Area Network (WAN)

bandwidth optimization: very low overhead Streamline Encapsulation (SLE), Header and

Payload Compression, Advanced Quality of Service (QoS), and Advanced Encryption Standard

(AES) Encryption.

• IEEE-1588v2 Precision Timing Protocol (PTP) and Jumbo Frame Support are available options.

• It features an internal expansion slot that is available for future FEC options, etc. The new base

hardware includes sufficient FPGA and memory resources to permit Comtech EF Data to

continue to update the capability of the modem as new technologies emerge.

• A specialized version of the CDM-625A – the CDMER-625A – is also available. In addition to

the features listed previously, this Environmentally Resistant (ER) version of the CDM-625A

offers added protection in more aggressive operating environments that have a higher

concentration of dust, sand and salt. The ER version also provides an extended operating

temperature range of 0° to 60° C.

The ER version uses an application of Urethane Conformal Coating (CC) and critical interface

protective covers for enhanced protection against dust, sand, and salt. Special protective

Conformal Coating and protective covers are used and have been designed to ensure that the

CDMER-625A meets MIL-STD-810G requirements including Method 510 Procedure I (Blowing

Dust), Method 510 Procedure II (Blowing Sand), and Method 509 (Salt Fog). Both the CC and

protective connector covers are fabricated using non-nutrient fungal growth materials.

The ER version is not designed to be used in an uncontrolled environment or outdoor

application.
