modem.

Table 7-4 Symptoms and Actions Against Connection Failures with Device

Management Terminal

No.

Symptom

Action

1

Nothing is displayed on the
screen.

Confirm with the procedure below.
1. Confirm that the status lamp of the router lights in green. See Section 7.1.2

when it does not light in green.

2. Ensure that cable is connected properly.
3. Ensure that RS232C cross cable is used.
4. Ensure that terminal software settings, such as port number, communication

speed, data length, parity bit, stop bit, and flow control are as follows:
• Communication speed: 1200, 2400, 4800, 9600, 19200bps
• Data length: 8 bits
• Parity bit: none
• Stop bit: 1 bit
• Flow control: none

2

Key input is not accepted.

Confirm with the procedure below.
1. Flow control by XON/XOFF might be interrupting data transmission/receipt.

Reset the interrupt with Ctrl+Q. If key input is still disabled, confirm the
following

2. Ensure that terminal software is configured properly.
3. Ctrl+S might have suspended the screen. Press any key.

3

Abnormal characters
appear at login.

Negotiation with communication software may be incorrect. Inspect the
transmission speed setting on communication software.
1. If the transmission speed for the CONSOLE(RS232C) has been set to

undefined, ensure that the transmission speed on terminal software is set to
9600 bps router command; Configuration Command (CLI type 1).

2. If the transmission speed for the CONSOLE(RS232C) has been set to 19200,

9600, 4800, 2400, or 1200 bps, ensure that the transmission speed on
terminal software is accordingly set by router command; Configuration
Command (CLI type 1).

3. If the transmission speed for the CONSOLE(RS232C) has been set to auto,

ensure that the transmission speed on terminal software is set to 19200,
9600, 4800, 2400, or 1200 bps by router command; Configuration Command
(CLI type 1). Issue a break signal from terminal software, and ensure that
login window appears. Login window may not appear until multiple break
signals are issued, depending on the transmission speed. See the manual of
terminal software for how to issue the break signal.

4. If the device management terminal is connected to the AUX port, ensure that

the transmission speed of terminal software is set to 9600 bps.

4

Abnormal characters
appear during user name
input.

Transmission speed for the CONSOLE(RS232C) in the configuration information
may have been changed. See above for possible actions.

5

You cannot log in.

Confirm with the procedure below.
1. If login prompt is not displayed, the router is starting. Wait a moment.
2. See if the maximum number of accounts have logged in. See Subsection
