(i) If the interface state indicates “REBOOTING,” “INIT,” “SELECTING” or

“REQUESTING,” the IP address is being derived. Wait for a while before
checking it again.

(ii) If the response waiting time-out (timeout counts) is counted up, the

communication with the DHCP server is not normal. Confirm that the DHCP
server has been set correctly and identify the problem with Section , “(d)
Determination of Failure Range” on page 7-44.

(iii) If the transmission packet number (DHCPDISCOVER) is counted up and the

receiving packet number (DHCPOFFER) is not counted up, the
communication with the DHCP server is not normal. Confirm that the DHCP
server has been set correctly identify the problem with Section , “(d)
Determination of Failure Range” on page 7-44.

(iv) If the number of DHCPNAK packets in the receiving packet is counted, the IP

address allocation from the DHCP server device is rejected. Confirm that the
DHCP sever has been set correctly and identify the problem with (d)
Determination of Failure Range
on page 7-44.

(c) Inspection of Configuration Definition Information

An IP address that cannot be allocated from the DHCP server could be caused by an
error in setting this device’s configuration definition (DHCP client). Items to be
confirmed are given below:

Confirm the Configuration Defining Information and Check that the Interface Definition
and the Specified Option are Appropriate.

With regard to the request option to the DHCP server (require), the specified options
must all be notified from the DHCP server. Confirm the support options in the DHCP
server device.

If it is necessary to derive the DNS server address or the default router address, a
designation must be made by using the “require” option so that the configuration
defining information

dhcp-client

command sends a request to the server to derive the

default router’s address. Whether the addresses of the default router and the DNS
server have been derived normally can be confirmed by the

dhcp show lease

command. (See to (b) Confirmation of the Status of the DHCP Client of this Device on
page 7-42).

(d) Determination of Failure Range

If the IP address is not allocated to this device’s DHCP client interface and the device
has no impediment, it is possible that an impediment was generated between this
device and the DHCP server. Confirm the connection of this device’s network devices
including HUB and cables (if possible, identify the impediment position by using the

ping

command from the DHCP side).

Troubleshooting PPPoE Communication Failures

Causes of PPPoE communication failures may fall in the following categories:

1. Network configuration changes

2. Change of configuration defining information related to PPPoE.

3. Setting value for mru (MTU)

4. Setting value for mss information
