If there is no problem, check the status of this device’s DHCP client in regards to 2
above.

If the device appears to have a problem, check the configuration defining information
in regards to 1 above.

If there is no apparent problem, refer to 3 and 4 above. Check for the connection of
the network devices including HUB and cables and the contents of the setting for
DHCP server and relay agent.

See Table 7-14, DHCP Client Communication Failures Troubleshooting Chart, for a
flowchart for troubleshooting these failures.

(a) Inspection of Log Message and Interface

One possible reason why the IP address would not be allocated to this device’s DHCP
client interface is an interruption of communication between the DHCP client and
the DHCP server. Inspect the log messages shown in the router and the interface up/
down status by the

show ip interface

command. For the procedure, refer to Section

7.5.1, “Communication cannot be done or communication is disconnected” on page
7-23.

(b) Confirmation of the Status of the DHCP Client of this Device

An IP address that cannot be allocated from the DHCP server could be an
impediment in this device’s DHCP client. Items to be confirmed are given below:
