Laplace Kernel
The
Laplace
kernel performs nondirectional spatial filtering functions that
sharpen gradients lying along both the X–axis and the Y–axis of the image.
The coefficients in the
Laplace
kernel are arrayed in a 3x3 matrix, as
follows:

Figure 7.55 illustrates the effect of the
Laplace
kernel on a dark inspected
object on a light background.

In Figure 7.55, the
Laplace
kernel causes the gradients on the all sides of the
inspected object to appear as a very thin line of light pixels, while the pixels
surrounding the gradients were converted to medium gray.
