Note that the

Position

operation needs to specify only one feature, while the

Distance

operation needs to specify two features. In the first case, only the

button is active; in the second case, the

button and the

button are both active.

In addition to specifying the appropriate offsets, the feature selection process
also specifies the edge search direction and the edge search mode.

Here is a brief description of the feature selection functions:

Mode –– The mode selects a particular group of edges that a profile tool
evaluates when searching for a specified feature.

Direction –– The direction function selects the direction of the search for
the specified features along the length of the profile image.

Offset –– The offset function enables you to identify one edge, or a
midpoint between two edges, as the specified feature.

Method –– The method selection determines whether a midpoint offset is
located exactly midway across an object, or is skewed toward the “center
of gravity” of an object.

Mode

When you pick the

Mode

field in the

Feature

selection panel, the

Feature

Mode

selection panel appears on the screen, as shown in Figure 7.134.

The operation of the profile tool feature modes is described briefly as
follows:

All Edges –– This feature mode causes the profile tool to include all
detected “edges” in its search for a specified feature (this includes edges
and all midpoints between each pair of consecutive edges, the center
between the extreme edges, and the starting edge).
