This guide is for the networking professional using the CanogaOS command-line interface (CLI) to
manage the Canoga Perkins 9170, 9171 and 9175 Metro Ethernet Switches, hereafter referred to as the
switch or the multilayer switch. Before using this guide, you should have experience working with the
CanogaOS and the switch software features. Before using this guide, you should have experience working
with the CanogaOS and be familiar with the concepts and terminology of Ethernet and local area
networking.

1.2 Purpose

The Canoga Perkins Metro Ethernet Switches are supported by the Metro IP Base Image, Metro IP
Services Image or Advanced Metro IP Services Image. The IP Services Image and Advanced Metro IP
Services Image provides a richer set of enterprise-class features, including hardware-based IP unicast and
multicast routing, inter-VLAN routing, routed access control lists (ACLs), and the HSRP. All Canoga
Perkins Gigabit Ethernet switches are shipped with the IP services image pre-installed. After initial
deployment, you can order the upgrade kit to upgrade Canoga Perkins Ethernet switches from the Metro IP
Base Image to the Metro IP Services or Advanced Metro IP Services Images.

This guide provides the information you need about the Layer 2 and Layer 3 commands that have been
created or changed for use with the Canoga Perkins family of 917x Metro Ethernet Switches.

This guide does not provide procedures for configuring your switch. For detailed configuration procedures,
see the Canoga Perkins CanogaOS Configuration Guide.
