Configuring multicast routing and forwarding

In multicast implementations, multicast routing and forwarding are implemented by routing and

forwarding tables:

Each multicast routing protocol has its own multicast routing table, such as the PIM routing table.

The multicast routing information of different multicast routing protocols forms a general multicast
routing table.

The multicast forwarding table helps guide the forwarding of multicast packets.

A multicast routing table consists of a set of (S, G) entries, each indicating the routing information for

delivering multicast data from a multicast source to a multicast group. If a router supports multiple
multicast protocols, its multicast routing table includes routes generated by multiple protocols. The router

selects the optimal route from the multicast routing table based on the configured multicast routing and

forwarding policy and adds the route entry into its multicast forwarding table.

Configuration prerequisites

Before you configure multicast routing, you need to configure a unicast routing protocol so that all

devices in the domain are interconnected at the network layer.

Configuration task list

Task Remarks

Enabling multicast routing

Required.
Globally enable multicast routing. By default, multicast routing is disabled.
Multicast routing must be enabled before other Layer 3 multicast functions can
take effect.

Displaying multicast routing
table

Required.
Display multicast routing table entries that are calculated by a specific multicast
routing protocol.
The multicast routing table is the basis of multicast forwarding. You can view the

establishment state of an (S, G) entry by checking the multicast routing table.

Enabling multicast routing

1.

Select Network > Routing Management > Multicast Routing from the navigation tree.
The Global Configuration page appears.
