9. Devices

A device is an external unit that provides inputs to a router or distributes outputs from a router, such
as a VTR, monitor, and so on. Devices that deliver outputs to router inputs are called sources.
Devices that receive inputs from router outputs are called destinations. Some devices can function
as both sources and destinations.

Devices are organized by category and level set. No device can be added to the NV9000-SE system
until level sets have been created to which the device can be assigned. (See

Categories

on page 189

and

Creating a Level Set

on page 114.)

In general, devices are added using the ‘Add Device’ wizard or ‘Add Multiple Devices’ wizard.
Device information can then be managed through the ‘Devices’ page or through individual tables.
Wizards, pages and tables share databases so that information entered in one interface appears in all
related interfaces.

Device information may also be imported from a spreadsheet. For more information, see

Importing

and Exporting Data

on page 53.

Physical device connections currently being used in the NV9000-SE system can be viewed at any
time and a report exported. In addition, any “orphaned” connections can be deleted. For more infor-
mation, see

Device Connections Queries

on page 183.

Devices are managed using the following interfaces:

• ‘Add Device’ wizard (accessed through the ‘Tasks’ pane)

A step-by-step guide to add a sin-

gle device. Opens the ‘Device Details’ page through which devices are defined. See

Adding a

Device

on page 159.

• ‘Add Multiple Devices’ wizard (accessed through the ‘Tasks’ pane)

A time saving interface

that enables several devices belonging to the same category to be added in a single session. See

Adding a Device

on page 159.

• ‘Devices’ page (accessed through the ‘Configuration’ pane)

A list of existing devices. Opens

the ‘Device Details’ page through which devices can be added, updated and associated with
level sets. See

Updating Devices

on page 171.

• ‘Devices’ table – (accessed through the ‘Views’ pane)

A list of level sets and associated

devices, one level set per row, with name and description. See

Locating and Viewing Device

Details

on page 167.

• ‘PhysConns’ table (accessed through the ‘Views’ pane)

A list of all physical connections for

all devices in the NV9000-SE system. Using this table, connection ports for devices can be
added, edited, or removed. See

Adding, Updating or Deleting Physical Connections

on page

177.

• ‘Query Phys Conns’ table (accessed through the ‘Tasks’ pane)

A list of all devices, by level

set, and the virtual levels assigned to inputs and outputs. Using this table, devices can be added.
For more information, see

Device Connections Queries

on page 183.
