14. External Interfaces

External interfaces are NV9000 software components that can be added to your NV9000 configura-
tion. Some applications exist by default and some are optional. For a list of available applications,
contact Technical Service.

External interfaces are managed using the following interfaces:

• ‘Add External Interface’ wizard (accessed through the ‘Tasks’ pane)

A step-by-step guide to

add a single external interface. Opens the ‘External Interface Details’ page through which
external interfaces are defined. See

Adding an External Interface

on page 409.

• ‘External Interfaces’ page (accessed through the ‘Configuration’ pane)

A list of existing

external interfaces. A new external interface can be added to this list. Opens the ‘External Inter-
face Details’ page through which external interfaces are defined and updated. See

Updating

External Interface Information

on page 417.

• ‘Apps’ table (accessed through the ‘Views’ pane)

A list of existing external interfaces and

configuration files, one row per interface type with name, control point, parameters, run condi-
tion, run priority and log mode. Using this table an external interface can be added to an exist-
ing interface type and connection protocols managed. See

Locating and Viewing Existing

External Interfaces

on page 414 and

Updating External Interface Information

on page 417.

Adding an External Interface

An external device can be added and configured at any time. NV9000-SE saves all configuration
changes to the database. Once changes are saved, there is no “undo” function; the configuration is
permanently altered. To implement saved configuration changes, the changes must be written to the
NV9000 system controller for dispersal to connected routers. For information on implementing
changes, see

Implementing Configuration Changes

on page 17.

External interfaces can be added using a wizard, page or table. Each performs specific tasks:

• ‘Add External Interface’ wizard (accessed through the ‘Tasks’ pane)

A step-by-step guide to

add a single external interface. Opens the ‘External Interface Details’ page through which
external interfaces are defined. However, the wizard does not allow you to configure the control
point, run condition, run priority, and log mode. These tasks are performed using the ‘Apps’
table.

• ‘External Interfaces’ page (accessed through the ‘Configuration’ pane)

A list of existing

external interfaces. A new external interface can be added to this list. Opens the ‘External Inter-
face Details’ page through which external interfaces are defined.

• ‘Apps’ table (accessed through the ‘Views’ pane)

A list of existing external interfaces and

configuration files, one row per interface type. Using this table, an external interface can be
added to an existing interface type. However, connection information is not added. Ethernet or
serial connection information is added using the ‘External Interfaces Details’ page accessed
through the ‘External Interfaces’ page.
