Adding a Device

Categories

Devices can be organized by general categories: monitor, VTR, DVD, etc. Operators can select a
category to narrow the list of devices to choose from when selecting destinations or sources. Each
category can be abbreviated, such as MON for monitor. This means that most control panel buttons
can be assigned a category to help define the device being selected. To further define a device, a
number can also be added. In NV9000-SE, up to 8 characters can be used to define a device. This
can greatly help the control panel operator.

Example: There two monitors, one for HD and one for SD. Each control panel button can be
assigned a set of characters that define which device is which:
A: Press MON, Press # [1 of 24] vs.
B: Press MON, press SD (or HD), press # [1 of 12]

Although with B there is one more button press, the operator does not have to remember which of
the 24 monitors is HD and which is SD.

Another reason for using a combination of letters and numbers is that perhaps the devices are more
easily identified by something other than a simple index number. Consider a facility that has 3
VTRs and 2 monitors in each of 20 rooms on 5 floors of 3 buildings. A well thought out combina-
tion of characters can identify the device groups by building number, floor number, and room num-
ber. Then, VTRs and monitors can have the same device numbers in each room.

Adding a Device

A device can be added and configured at any time after level sets have been configured (See

Level

Sets

on page 111). Devices cannot be added until level sets have been defined; devices must be

associated with level sets. For more information, see

Creating a Level Set

on page 114. It is recom-

mended that devices be added off-line. That ensures that all settings are correct before you go
“live.” Once changes are saved, there is no “undo” function; the configuration is permanently
altered. To implement configuration changes, the NV9000 control system must write the configura-
tion and then be restarted. For more information, see the NV9000 User’s Guide.

Devices can be added using a wizard, a page, or tables. Each performs specific tasks:

• ‘Add Device’ wizard (accessed through the ‘Tasks’ pane)

A step-by-step guide to add a sin-

gle device. Opens the ‘Device Details’ page through which devices are defined.

• ‘Add Multiple Devices’ wizard (accessed through the ‘Tasks’ pane)

A step-by-step guide that

enables several devices belonging to the same category to be added quickly in one session.

• ‘Devices’ page (accessed through the ‘Configuration’ pane)

A list of existing devices to

which a new device can be added. Opens the ‘Device Details’ page through which devices are
defined.

• ‘Devices’ table (accessed through the ‘Views’ pane)

A list of level sets and associated

devices, one level set per row, with name, description and filepath. A device can be added using
this table. However, no connection information can be added. I/O connector information is
added using the ‘Devices’ page accessed through the ‘Configuration’ pane.

To quickly add several different devices, minimal information for each router can be entered in the
‘Add Device’ wizard and then the

Finish

button pressed. This adds the device name and clears all

fields so that another device can be added immediately. However, no level sets, categories or other
