Updating Devices

Device information can be updated at any time. Once changes are saved, there is no “undo” func-
tion; the configuration is permanently altered. To implement saved configuration changes, the
changes must be written to the NV9000 system controller for dispersal to connected routers. For
information on implementing changes, see

Implementing Configuration Changes

on page 17.

Device information can be updated using either pages or tables. The pages accessed through the
‘Configuration’ pane and the tables accessed through the ‘Views’ pane share databases. Changes
made in one interface appear in other interfaces that share that database. For example, if the name
of a router is updated in the ‘Devices’ page, the name is automatically updated in the ‘Devices’
table.

Although both a page and table may update the same information, each interface enables you to
perform specific tasks more efficiently. Pages enable you to update several pieces of information
for a single device through a single interface. Tables are useful for updating a limited, specific
amount of information for several devices at once. In addition, not all tables update the same infor-
mation; different tables manage different, specific device information.

Different NV9000-SE interfaces perform specific tasks, as follow:

Changing a Device Name or Description

It is important that device names are unique and descriptive in order to avoid confusion. Once
changed, the new device name populates all instances of that name throughout the system.

Device names and descriptions can be changed using the ‘Devices’ page accessed through the
‘Configuration’ pane or the ‘Devices’ table accessed through the ‘Views’ pane.

How to Update a Device Name or Description Using the ‘Devices’ Page

1 Launch NV9000-SE. (See

Launching and Exiting the Application

on page 12.)

2 Locate and select the device being updated. (See

How to Locate and View Devices Using the

‘Devices’ Page

on page 168.)

3 From the Navigation area, select the ‘Configuration’ pane and then ‘Devices’. The ‘Devices’

page displays, as shown in Figure 9-10.
To narrow the list of devices that display, enter the first characters of a device name in the
‘Device Filter’ field. The list is automatically reduced to display only devices matching that
character string.
