Constant Surface Speed

As a cutting tool’s distance from the center of a rotating part changes, the
surface speed also changes. Use the constant surface speed feature (CSS)

to maintain a tool’s cutting speed on a rotating part regardless of the

diameter of the part. Refer to your programming and operation manual for

more information.

The CSS feature is activated in a program by a G96 code. A surface speed

is programmed with an S-word. The CSS feature maintains a constant

surface speed by varying the spindle RPM as the cutting tool’s distance

from the center of rotation changes.

CSS helps to produce a uniform machine finish for a rotating part.
